wildmage_daine: (wolf snarl)
It's past nightfall, which normally means it's past time Daine got back to the farmhouse. But her hours are still a bit wonky, thanks to at least one nocturnal housemate and the fact that she's rarely required to be anywhere before mid-afternoon. So, she's out flying. Owl shape is one of her favorites, and if she burns off a little magic, she'll be more likely to feel tired and actually get some sleep during the hours when she ought to.

She doesn't have any particular destination in mind, and is gliding over a neighborhood she's never even set foot in when she hears a woman scream. It seizes at her, though it's not a voice she recognizes. It certainly doesn't sound anything like Ma. But even now, years after the farm was razed, Daine can't stand the thought of a woman screaming and no one coming. Heart in her throat, she stoops toward the sound.

Two men have the woman cornered in an alleyway, one with a knife in hand. Daine allows herself only a moment to regret the fact that this is as likely to terrify her as her assailants as she drops into the alley on silent wings. She shifts quickly into wolf shape behind the men's backs, earning herself a wide-eyed look from the woman backed up against the brickwork. The man with the knife starts to turn, but Daine's already surging forward to clamp her jaws around his arm and yank him back, aiming to jostle the knife out of his grip. The woman screams again, but this time it's joined by a cry of pain from the man she's grabbed hold of and some startled cursing from the other one.

There's something grimly satisfying about dragging him away from his quarry, an echo of the cold fury she'd felt when she ran with the Pack. But there's no Pack here -- or none that can be expected to help her, now. Not that she expects a couple of two-leggers to challenge her overmuch, especially if the woman has the good sense to run.

But she's so focused on the knife that she doesn't see the other man fumblingly pull out a gun.

Okay, so he knows it's technically a bad thing when he hears someone scream, but on the odd occasion, he can't help it: he knows that his day isn't going to be boring, at the very least. That said, it doesn't sound like mild shenanigans when he hears the scream, and then another one shortly after... and what sounds like a wild animal?

Wild animal sounds in the middle of the city were a bad thing, as a rule of thumb.

He swings over to the alley and the sight that greets him isn't all that much of a surprise: stupid armed thugs #1 and #2 and a frightened woman. The wolf, that's... well, it's not an entirely crazy thing in Darrow, but it's still One of These Things is Not Like the Other. And with that tune regrettably in his head, he webs down to the alleyway.

"Hey boys!" One web shoots the gun out of Thug #1's hand, with two more shooting out to glue his feet down, the other glues Thug #2's mouth shut as he starts to shout. "Howdy ma'am! Pupper," he addresses the wolf.

"Hey, where do you think you're going?" Peter watches as the man tries to bolt - and can't help but be a little tickled when he sees the bear (that was slightly more unexpected) tackle him to the ground. Between the two of them, it looks like things are taken care of, though he can't help but notice that the bear? Looks slightly annoyed.

Can bears even look annoyed?

He drops down to the ground in the alleyway, a safe distance away from the freaked out lady (god, aren't they used to this by now?) and within several feet of the bear and its, uh. Friend. The man is still making those same struggling noises, and he chuckles without meaning to, kneeling down to wave. "Hey pal! Don't worry. I think the boys in blue are coming."

The woman they saved (saved is questionable, given the reaction, but hey) is still cowering against a wall, and he sighs. "You okay, ma'am?" He takes the shaky nod she gives as a yes, and looks back toward the bear.

"You don't look like you're gonna maul me, so. If you can understand me? You can probably let him go. Probably want to, before he pees himself or something." He webs the guy's hands and feet to the floor.
